WMUR: EMILY’s List to endorse Shea-Porter in NH’s 1st District for fifth time

By John DiStaso

The influential women’s political group EMILY’s List on Wednesday will endorse  Democrat Carol Shea-Porter’s bid for a fourth term in the U.S. House representing the state’s First Congressional District.

The announcement, released first to, quotes group president Stephanie Schriock as calling Shea-Porter “a tireless champion for women and families.”

It will be the fifth time since 2008 the group will have backed Shea-Porter.

Shea-Porter, of Rochester, was first elected to the House seat in 2006 and was re-elected in 2008. She lost to current Republican U.S. Rep. Frank Guinta in 2010, but then defeated him in 2012. In 2014, Guinta won back the seat from Shea-Porter.

Shea-Porter announced in September that she is running for the seat again this year. She faces Democratic primary opposition from Bedford businessman Shawn O’Connor.

Guinta is running for reelection, with GOP primary opposition for the second consecutive election from Dan Innis.

EMILY’s List, which says it is the nation’s largest “resource for women in politics,” endorsed Shea-Porter in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and now in 2016.

“As the first woman elected to represent New Hampshire in Congress, Carol began a strong tradition of women’s leadership,” Schriock said in a statement. “She is a leader in the fight to end gender discrimination in pay, and, as a former social worker, she is a powerful advocate for policies that give all Granite Staters a fair shot.”

“New Hampshire women and families are sick and tired of the Republicans’ dangerous agenda. The stakes are high for this swing district in 2016, and the EMILY’s List community is proud to stand with Carol Shea-Porter in New Hampshire,” Schriock said.

EMILY’s List cited Shea-Porter’s support for paycheck fairness legislation and her advocacy of “common sense policies that help women get ahead.”

EMILY’s List has already place Guinta on its “On Notice” list, which is its top target list for 2016.
